Carling Black Label is a lager with a clean, crisp, and refreshing taste. It has a higher alcohol level than other beers at 5.5%, so it is regularly referred to as being a strong beer. The branding of Black Label down through the years has been associated with hard work, particularly in relation to South African men.
Have You Heard Carling Black Label Being Called Zamalek?
Carling Black Label is known by many South Africans by the name Zamalek. The origins of this nickname are typically South African, demonstrating the humour that exists in the country.
Zamalek first started being used to refer to Carling Black Label in the 1990s. It all started when an Egyptian soccer team played the Kaiser Chiefs, the popular Johannesburg football team.
The Egyptian team was called Zamalek and they hammered their South African opponents. Local fans said Zamalek the soccer team was stronger than Carling Black Label. It didn’t take long after that for the affectionate nickname to take hold.
History of Carling Black Label
Black Label is a Canadian brand that today is owned by an American company. The brand itself has been around since the 1870s. The original version of Carling Black Label was brewed in Ontario in Canada. It was known as Black & White Lager before the company changed the name to Black Label in the 1920s.
Black Label was introduced in South Africa in 1966. While not strictly a South African beer, South Africa is one of the most successful markets for Black Label and it remains one of the most popular beers available.
Over the years the brand has supported soccer and rugby in South Africa and has been associated with many concerts. It has also won many awards, including being named the World’s Best Bottled Lager. More recently it won Grand Gold at the Monde International Awards and came second at IBD Africa.
